With professional experience in the beauty industry since 2009, trained in brow shaping, brow tinting, and makeup artistry by Benefit Cosmetics, I worked as one of the region's top brow artists at the Benefit Brow Bar in Smithfield, Rhode Island. I have worked extensively in cosmetics sales as well, for companies like Lancôme, Sephora, and Ulta Beauty.

I do not consider myself an "Instagram Brow" artist - I prefer to keep a client's brow natural and consistent with what their hair and bone structure can support. Forcing your brow into a shape that is unnatural for your particular hair growth pattern will do nothing but add more time to your makeup routine!

I am pleased to share that I am "Arch Addicts Approved" - a title given to stylists chosen by a team of brow experts known as Arch Addicts (www.archaddicts.com).

In March 2017, I trained with California-based celebrity brow artist, Kelley Baker (Kourtney, Khloe & Kim Kardashian, Zendaya, Shay Mitchell)!

On a personal note, I am a native Vermonter who has been working and attending school in Massachusetts and Rhode Island for over a decade. I am currently a student at the University of Rhode Island where I will receive an undergraduate degree in Psychology with a minor in Film Studies. I am on the Autism/ADHD Spectrum - I welcome and celebrate those of all neurodivergencies and abilities in my personal life and in my salon.

In my free time, I enjoy swimming, mermaiding, dancing, cosplay, painting, writing, collecting vintage memorabilia, doing arts & crafts projects, and spending time with my pets (Mickey and Daryl the parrots, Wednesday the cat, and Lola the lizard) and family, as well as volunteering and fundraising for Foster Parrots, Ltd., a wildlife sanctuary in Hope Valley, RI. Brows By Jane™ is the proud sponsor of two resident parrots, Leaf & Twig, who have lived at the sanctuary since 2012.

WHY THE 1980s?

I have been listening to and studying '80s music (mostly New Wave, Post-Punk and Pop) since I heard A Flock of Seagull's, "I Ran", for the first time at the age of 11. I have spent the last two decades studying '80s film and pop culture and over the years, feel that the sights and sounds of this particular decade are somehow directly tied into whatever drives me creatively.

I was 15 years old when I came up with the idea for an '80s-themed salon and my passion for all things '80s seems to have become an integral part of my identity. I invite you to step back in time with me at my salon!

MANGO "MANGIE" BATES

1951-2019

Brows By Jane is dedicated to my beloved pet and best friend, Mango, a Red-Lored Amazon parrot whom I adopted in 2013. Mango lost his life to cancer (lymphoma) on February 6th, 2019 at the age of 68. Though he was once taken from his natural family when poached from the jungle, and endured many years of abuse and re-homing in the pet trade, he still had room left in his heart for me. Mango spent the last six years of his life as my guardian, soul mate, and greatest inspiration. His legacy lives on in my personal and professional achievements as well as my commitment to wildlife conservation and exotic animal rescue.
